Balinese Ladies Putting On Makeup, Pre-Ceremony (表演节目前正在妆扮的女郎), 2000, Oil on Canvas, 94.5 x 119 cm
This oil painting of Balinese women was inspired by Koeh Sia Yong’s travels to Bali, Indonesia. In it, viewers can see Koeh’s masterful grasp of colour theory, as vibrant yellows and oranges are layered to give the impression of shining golden headdresses and clothes. Contrasted against the calm green waters of the lake in the background, a tranquil atmosphere pervades the painting. The womens’ actions mirror the mood as well, as one woman carefully cradles another’s chin while applying makeup, while another eagerly watches them both.
